We lived in the city for fifteen years on a teeny teeny city lot. We spent those years learning and growing on a small scale. Even though we were limited on space, we used it all. We started slow with a little zucchini garden in the back yard. Each year we added more plants. Then we added a little 10×10 hoop house to extend our growing season. With the encouragement of my sister we added chickens for eggs. Each time we grew, we kept track of what went well and where we could improve.
Then we really shocked the neighborhood and nearly turned our entire front yard into a garden complete with a dwarf apple tree. Who needs grass?! Then the year we sold our house we turned the yard on the east side of our house into two garden spaces. A salsa garden on one side and cucumbers with calendula on the other. They did phenomenal! Every single year we added plants and learned a new skill. 75% of our plants we started by seed. We didn’t have a room to dedicate to that so we used our closets. It worked great! And of course we learned how to design a watering system with a timer. It was a wonderful time saver!
2021 we decided it was time to grow even more. We sold our city lot and set our sights on a country place. We lived in a camper for a bit while we decided and soon found ourselves in the Idaho panhandle. We absolutely love it here. Our garden is MUCH bigger and the farm is doing well. And of course we have plans to keep growing!
